This is the link to the Bloomberg review of the latest House Benghazi Committee Report. I encourage you to read it (and the Democrats’ minority opinion. Apparently, the report’s bottom line is that some folks in the government should have been better prepared and responded faster!
I would like for the House and Senate take that admonishment to heart with regard to the Zika virus. The Senate Republicans and Democrats have worked together to craft a funding bill to prepare for the Zika virus, but House Republicans still have not compromised with their own Senate Republicans.
I surely believe that our military personnel and diplomatic corps deserve the best protection we can give. But I also believe that Republicans have a blind spot when it comes to public health for all Americans—including expectant parents who desperately want their babies to be healthy. And the odds are that the Congress will go on summer break with nothing done. The House Republicans are letting their party politics interfere with the needs of the country. The damage will not be only to Democrats, Republicans, Tea Party members, etc, but all will be exposed. Even the tone deaf governor of Florida sees the need and has asked his arch nemesis, the President, for help.
If you think Americans get upset when they see puppies that have been abused on Facebook (and I don’t blame them), you haven’t seen anything yet. If Zika destroys the lives of some of Americans (an outcome I want Congress to work quickly to try to avoid), the country will begin to ask who is to blame. And when they find out who it was, those responsible will be singled out. What a shame! Instead, why can’t we work together to anticipate threats and move quickly to address them—instead of spending millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money and the valuable time of our leaders on the “blame game.”
But hey, unless and until we can do that, no need to wait--“Go ahead and start the investigation”…
