One of my family posted a picture of the modern flag with the original pledge of allegiance super imposed. Immediately the responses came that some would never post this photo, because it did not include “under God”. It seemed they either didn’t understand it’s historical significance or didn’t approve of the first version. The term “under God” has become a lightning rod of division.
That is why the “Great Seal of the United States” is appealing. First suggested in 1776 the seal included the motto E Pluribus Unum, basically describes the action “Many uniting into one”. The seal that was eventually approved in 1782 moved the motto onto the face of the seal.
The shame of it is that we have allowed the phrase “under God” become a term of division.
