In a recent meeting with an influential Irish Theologian he made the comment that the conflict in Northern Ireland was resolved when both sides tired of the bloodshed and revenge attacks. He stated that eventually the majority got tired of the constant killing and the injury of their neighbors. Remembering old offences no longer justified the chaos.
My choice to run for US Congress partially reflects those sentiments. It is time to stop yelling at each other. The anger and frustration may have historical basis, but at some point attacking your neighbor and fellow citizens simply drags you all down. This level of frustration has reached the point that even the parties are warring within themselves. Reminds me of the comments from another religious leader “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.”
I spoke to a long term friend who is a local minister. He does not always agree with me on all issues. Recently I read some of his comments pertaining to a social media post by another local minister. The post turned out to be false. My friend stated this was propaganda and warned his members. One of the areas that causes the most confusion is propaganda, half-truths or non-truths. Many of our friends are to the point that they no longer accept a statement just because they agree with the sentiment. A couple of years ago a long time friend told me she didn’t care if what she had said was true, she believed it anyway. More and more people are trying to verify that what is being used to incite them is true. Remember the saying “you will know the truth and the truth will set you free”?
As the Irish finally saw the futility of incessant revenge and the damage to all, I hope Americans see the harm they are doing to themselves and the country
Hopefully the tide is turning for the truth, no one party has the corner on truth. There will still be propaganda and those who want to believe it. As you prepare to vote don’t fall for the same ole same ole. I will attempt to work with any US citizen who has a legitimate point. We may not reach agreement, but we can reach understanding without animus. The angry reaction of eliminating those who do not agree hasn’t work over the last 20 years.
